Everyone at some point has had to deal with temptation. You are either past it, heading toward more of it, or in it now. I want you to hear this: Satan is very predictable. He has been playing the temptation game since the garden story in Genesis. Therefore, Paul said in 2nd Corinthians 2:11, “we are not ignorant of his devices”.
We often think that temptation is around us. This is false because God says that it is within us. You see what happens is that Satan identifies a desire in you first. If you didn’t have an internal desire, then the temptation wouldn’t pull you. Temptation always starts in your mind, not in circumstances. Therefore, Jesus said, “it is from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts…” Even what we say sometimes is a temptation from that old devil. (Just look at Matthew 15:18). So even our speech should reflect Jesus.
Another truth about temptation concerns our doubts. It’s obvious that Satan plays on our doubting minds. That too is in the garden story; “God didn’t really say that.” Here is the most common lean into question about temptation regarding our doubts that is easily overlooked, Doesn’t God want me happy?
Trouble often follows this one question. The Bible warns, “Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving.” Hebrews 3:12
Now, doubt is not the same as unbelief, but it can sure lead to unbelief!
So, how did Jesus overcome temptation? With Scripture that He learned at a young age.
